I think Paradigms, using much more up to date speaker technology, are better sounding than the Advents, more efficient as well. Paradigm speakers have really good mid-range voicing, the Advent's longest suit. If you like the way they sound then yes it's a good idea, but it probably won't fool you into thinking you have different speakers. Will replacing the caps make a significant difference? I'm pretty sure you'll be able to hear some improvement but you'll not make the Advents sound a whole lot different. One problem is that the caps used in crossovers are often large values, which limits your choices, but there are plenty of them out there that are no doubt better sounding than what came with the Advents. I did this back in the 70s so I have no idea what is out there today and how they compare, but yes caps can make quite a difference. I use polycarbonite caps in my DQ-10 crossovers and those were a significant upgrade, though I made other changes as well. There are many other types of caps that will sound even better. Of couse you'll end up with double the capacitance if you do this, so you'll have to use lower value caps to maintain the proper capacitance. If you can't find non polarized caps you can make them by using two polarized caps in parallel but opposite polarities.

An easy upgrade is to replace polarized electrolytic capacitors with non polarized capacitors. Many old crossovers used electrolytic capacitors and they are not all that kind to audio. There are many types of capacitors and they all have their places. I've not played with the Advent crossover but capacitors can make a large difference. They're not specific to the Advents but that doesn't matter at all. Click to expand.Yes capacitors are available.
